The design of the exquisite French Empire settee originates from Chateau de Malmaison, Napoléon Bonaparte and Josephine de Beauharnais' palatial Parisian retreat before the pair rose to power as the Emperor and Empress of the dominant 18th century French Empire. Even before rising to royalty, Josephine had a penchant for opulence and grandeur which is reflected in the remarkable hand carved swans flanking each end of this beautiful settee. Although the original antiques were painted and gilded in gold, we have opted for a less ostentatious finish in favor of showcasing the materiality of the natural wood. Beautiful and rich mahogany wood accentuate the twin swan carvings, the settee's reeded top rail, the rosette motifs and the elegant saber legs. The warmth of the wood makes this couch, not only a wonderful conversation piece but one that is inviting to sit in as well. You will delight sitting in the comfort and support of our traditional hand-tied coil spring seat cushions, a rarity in today's sofas except for the top of the line antique reproductions.
Choose from French Empire style bee patterned jacquards, tapestry fabrics, and floral damasks. Or go for a more contemporary style with a designer textured fabric like our Robert Allen soft knits. Each French Empire settee can ordered as shown above or customized in your own choice of stain/painted finish and upholstery. Functional, comfortable, and forever elegant, the French Empire style is timeless and can similarly be seen in Laurel Crown's single-seater club chair and two-seater settee. Treat your living room like royalty with one or more pieces from our French Empire furniture collection.
